La Fête Nationale-Bastille Day

La Fête Nationale.png

July is a special month for me and my family. For the Americans in us we love celebrating the 4th of July, but there is another time of the month that is special. That day is July 14th.  That is what we call La Fête Nationale, or National day or if your state side Bastille Day.

Now, I know you are probably scratching your head wondering what the heck Bastille day is, or if you are familiar with history you’re probably wondering “why on earth are the French celebrating the storming of a prison?”

Well, the answer is simple. La Fête Nationale is much more then an angry mob storming a prison, it is quite literally the catalyst that catapulted the French liberating themselves from the monarchy. The beginning of democracy as we know it, for the French. Capturing the Bastille put into motion other actions ultimately ending the ancien regime by executing, King Louis XVI and his wife Marie-Antoinette in 1793.

Modern day France recognizes this day as the moment in history as the people’s revolution. On July 14th the day is celebrated with  military parades, fireworks and loads of street food. Of course in true French fashion there are a lot of other things going on as well, such as dancing and concerts!

Those who are French like me, or just want to experience the day, but are in the states can do so by visiting the French Consulate website. There are several planned activities for French people living abroad. (Though I am sure the military isn’t going to be marching or the fighter jets flying over head!)

Regardless of where you are from if you want to explore other cultures and try delicious foods this is a way. With a simple google search you are bound to find recipes that will make your Bastille day delicious.
